Getting Rid of a Double-Chin: Houston and New York Dermatologists On New, Non-Surgical Kybella™ Treatment

Houston, TX – The accumulation of excess fat in the upper neck area and under the chin is a very common problem related to weight fluctuation, genetics, and natural aging. Dr. Paul Friedman, a board-certified dermatologist in Houston and New York, says a “double-chin” can affect people of all body types, even those who are in terrific shape. People are often told that the only way to eliminate stubborn, diet- and exercise-resistant fat under the chin is with surgical liposuction; however, Dr. Friedman says a new treatment called Kybella™ is specifically designed to address the problem without requiring surgery.

Previously known as ATX-101, Kybella™ is a formulation of deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring body acid that breaks down dietary fat. Kybella™ utilizes this molecule to help destroy excess fat cells in targeted areas under the chin, where they will ultimately be removed through natural metabolic processes. Dr. Friedman says that since the treatment involves no surgery or general anesthesia, it can be performed as an in-office procedure and will likely take no more than 15-20 minutes to complete.
Kybella™ shows great promise in reducing excess fat and enhancing facial contours. Dr. Friedman notes that, while Kybella™ may be a great option for patients with a “double-chin” caused by excess fat accumulation, those who instead primarily have loose and inelastic skin may not benefit from this treatment. Kybella™ is only approved to be used to reduce excess fat in the chin, not other body areas. Dr. Friedman says that about two to four treatments with Kybella™ may be necessary to achieve the best results. But, he says, one of the chief benefits of Kybella™ is that the results are typically permanent.

Dr. Elizabeth Geddes specializes in cosmetic and medical dermatology.
