Rosacea Awareness Month

April is National Rosacea Month. According to The National Rosacea Society, more than 16 million people in America are affected by rosacea, although many may not know it1. This common inflammatory skin condition is characterized by persistent flushing and facial redness. It is often misdiagnosed as adult acne, so it is important to see an experienced Board-Certified Dermatologist if you suspect you may have rosacea.

The goal of National Rosacea Month is to build awareness and dispel common myths about rosacea. For example, many people think of rosacea as a “blushing” problem. The fact is that while stress can cause rosacea to flare up, the redness is attributed to issues with underlying blood vessels and can be triggered by a number of factors. Seeking professional treatment for rosacea is important in order to prevent long-term skin sequelae.

Dr. Friedman and Dr. Richmond Published in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine

As Board-Certified Dermatologists in Houston, Dr. Paul Friedman and Dr. Heather Richmond recognize the importance of effective rosacea treatment. They have utilized their training and expertise to develop advanced rosacea treatment plans for their patients. Dr. Friedman and Dr. Richmond, along with several colleagues, conducted a clinical study which was recently published research in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, a prestigious peer-reviewed scientific journal. The study measured the results of combining two rosacea treatments: pulsed dye laser (PDL) and oxymetazoline 1.0% cream. They found that combination therapy with both PDL and daily oxymetazoline 1% cream can safely and effectively reduce facial reddening (erythema) and the dilation of blood vessels (telangiectasias) after an average of two laser treatment sessions.
