Fraxel re:store fractional laser therapy combines the benefits of both ablative and non-ablative laser treatments. Fraxel re:store laser treatment precisely treats thousands of microscopic areas of skin, using pinpoint laser beams that penetrate beneath the skins surface. This allows for the elimination of epidermal pigmented cells and stimulates collagen production, leading to firmer, smoother skin, including the correction of wrinkles, scarringage spots, melasma, and other skin discolorations. At the same time, the majority of the skin is left intact, which allows it to heal very quickly and take advantage of the body’s natural healing process to produce new, glowing healthy skin.

The Best of Both Worlds

In the past, people seeking laser treatment of skin conditions had to choose between ablative and non-ablative laser treatments. Whereas ablative techniques gave superior results for the correction of aged and sun-damaged skin, they had significant side effects, including significant discomfort, prolonged healing time, and greater possibility of infection. In contrast, nonablative techniques have few risks, but give only limited results.

Fraxel® laser treatment combines the results of ablative laser therapy with the shorter healing period of non-ablative treatment. Each treatment session targets between 12-35 % of the skin’s surface, depending on the condition being treated and the results desired. Clinical studies have revealed that most treatment plans should include three to five sessions that can be spaced apart by weeks or months, depending on your schedule and your desired results.

The Treatment Session

When you arrive your face will first be cleaned with a mild scrub cleanser, then treated with a topical anesthetic ointment, which takes about 60 minutes to take effect. Once the anesthetic has taken, the Fraxel re:store procedure is performed, taking about 30 minutes.

After treatment, you may apply make-up or shave right away and many people go back to work immediately or the next day. You will experience a mild sunburn feeling for as much as an hour after the procedure, but once this subsides you will most likely feel no discomfort. The skin may be pinkish for three to five days after treatment. There may be minimal swelling that will subside in two to four days. You skin may be bronzed and may flake in a fashion consistent with a minor sunburn.

Be sure to use sunscreen at least twice daily to protect your sensitive skin from sun exposure during the healing phase. To get lasting results, continue to use sunscreen from the next few months, and consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat when out in the sun.

The full results of your Fraxel re:store treatment will become evident over the weeks and months following your final treatment session, as your body repairs the deeper dermal tissues that have been impacted.
