Birthmarks are very common, and many people may feel self-conscious about their appearance. Advances in laser technology now make it possible to greatly reduce the appearance of both mild and severe birthmarks. At Dermatology & Laser Surgery Center, our board certified dermatologists are highly trained in a variety of laser therapies that can safely and effectively treat birthmarks of all sizes, on virtually any area of the body.
If you’re considering birthmark treatment for yourself or your child, our team is here to guide you through every step with care and expertise. Here are some common questions to help determine if you are ready for a consultation.
- Will my birthmark treatments be covered by my insurance? Insurance coverage for birthmark treatments greatly varies. In some cases, if a birthmark is considered medically necessary to treat, such as when it interferes with vision, breathing, or other bodily functions, insurance may provide coverage. However, when treatment is primarily for cosmetic reasons, it is usually not covered. During your consultation, your physician will determine if treatment is medical necessary and if it is we will initiate the insurance approval process. Typically it takes 60 days to receive a response if your insurance plan covers treatments. During this time, if you elect to start treatments it would be on a fee for service basis.
- Is there a fee for consultation if I want to use my insurance? Yes. Until you are seen by the physician and your birthmark treatment is deemed medically necessary, we treat all inquiries according to our cosmetic consultation protocol.
- How much do birthmark treatments cost? Birthmark treatments start at $500 and up per treatment, with larger birthmarks ranging between $1,000 and $1,500 per treatment.
- Do you treat out of state patients? The answer is yes, but with Texas Medical Board regulations we are unable to perform any consults when the patient is outside the state of Texas. In order to initiate treatment you would have to come in office to meet with your physician. OUT OF STATE RESIDNETS MAY SEND IN A PHOTO TO SEE IF YOU ARE A CANDIDATE FOR A CONSULTATION.
- Can we schedule a consult and same day treatment? The answer is yes. However, if you would like to use your insurance, this first treatment would be a cash pay price as we would be unable to initiate the insurance process beforehand.
- How soon do I have to return for my next treatment? For optimal results patients may have to return every 3-6 weeks for treatment.
- Will my birthmark be fully removed? While laser treatments can significantly improve appearance, results are not always a permanent solution. Birthmarks can sometimes return or darken over time, therefore maintenance treatments may be recommended to help you maintain your results.
- What is the youngest age a patient can start treatments? We are able to treat infants as young as 5 days old, as early intervention has been shown to be especially effective and has the best chance for long-lasting improvement.
