Perlane®

In May 2007, the FDA approved Perlane®, a hyaluronic acid-based filler from the makers of Restylane®. Perlane has been approved for injection into the deep dermis for the correction of facial folds and wrinkles, especially nasolabial folds. The injection is used to provide deeper, longer correction of some forms of facial folds and may be used in conjunction with Restylane® or by itself, and it can be an excellent complement to BOTOX® injections.

The main difference between Perlane® and Restylane® is that Perlane® is made of larger hyaluronic acid gel particles. This gives Perlane greater lifting power, making it ideal for the correction of deep facial folds and even a good solution for some facial contouring applications. It is intended for use in applications where a greater volume of filler is required than is typically provided by Restylane® injections.

Like Restylane®, Perlane® is made of non-animal based hyaluronic acid and has a very low incidence of possible side effects. Some patients experience slightly greater swelling following injection of Perlane®. This typically resolves within two or three days. Ice and cold packs can help bring the swelling down.

Because hyaluronic acid is hydrophilic and attracts and binds water as it is absorbed by the body, it retains its volume for six months or more.
